First They Came…

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Exactly a year ago today, I shared the below Poem with a bunch of friends in an Email discussion. At that time, we felt some kind of anger over some injustice that we saw. But nothing could compare to the injustice that we saw yesterday. My deepest condolences to the family of Teo Beng Hock. I really really wonder what happened…

:(

My fiance and I are dedicating our 29th month anniversary to TBH and fiancee, we cancelled our dinner and movie date to attend vigil.

I had a discussion with some colleagues over lunch on the state and recent political issues. I can see that there’s still a lot of ignorance and “don’t care” attitude in many people. Thus the below poem kept popping into my head since lunch. Here’s sharing it again…

Original
Als die Nazis die Kommunisten holten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Kommunist.

Als sie die Sozialdemokraten einsperrten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Sozialdemokrat.

Als sie die Gewerkschafter holten,
habe ich nicht protestiert;
ich war ja kein Gewerkschafter.

Als sie die Juden holten,
habe ich geschwiegen;
ich war ja kein Jude.

Als sie mich holten,
gab es keinen mehr, der protestieren konnte.

Translation
When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

Then they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
I did not protest;
I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
I did not speak out;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out for me.

Let’s cry and shout for justice now, or forever remain silent…

Hari Raya 2

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

We struggled to wake up the next morning. Still, I need to be the loyal alarm clock and make sure everybody woke up by 8.10am.

We rushed back to our homes in Bukit Mertajam to wash up before rushing to meet up with the gang in Autocity at 9.30am to beraya bersama R.P.K.

9.59 am, we went on our way to Kamunting!

Nearing the place…

On the way, we passed by Kamunting Police Station.

Upon arriving, I saw this uncle limping towards the main gate where the police were standing.

Many supporters were there to beraya with R.P.K. and Marina.

Marina said, “I love your ribbons!”. Yes, very cute indeed. :)

Us from Bukit Mertajam.

After that, we went to Taiping to have lunch with Dr. Sivabalan, who was on duty during Hari Raya. We went to a typical coffee shop for lunch. Sad to say, all their food were a tad too mild for our Penangites’ tongue’s. While we were commenting on this, somebody said their friend’s from Taiping or Ipoh too complained that Penang food is a bit too strong for their taste buds. O well, like they say “One man’s meat is another man’s poison”.

I rest my case.

Sunday ~ 28th September 2008

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

We started our Sunday morning having breakfast together at the DimSum Restaurant.

We went to the shop where the “Go Bald to Protest Against ISA” was to take place…

Joshua posing with the Anti ISA Petition Banner

I met my friend’s father there. Some of the things he said “The ISA must go, how can Malaysia be a democratic country if this draconian law does not go?”

Binning ISA!!!~

Before parting, the organizers requested the participants to walk together around the monument in front of Dewan Sri Pinang each one holding a candle in their hands while chanting some Anti ISA quotes.

The police stopped us just after 1 minute, what? now we don’t even have the freedom to walk around the park? Nonetheless, we did not put up a fight because we were there for a peaceful gathering. Instead we sang a song, a very meaningful song,  before we disband.

We Shall Overcome

1. We shall overcome (x3) today
Oh deep in my heart
I do believe
We shall overcome today

2. We’ll walk hand in hand (x3) today
Oh deep in my heart
I do believe
We’ll walk hand in hand today

3. The ISA must go (x3) today
Oh deep in my heart
I do believe
The ISA must go today

4. Justice will prevail (x3) today
Oh deep in my heart
I do believe
Justice will prevail today

Candlelight Vigil: Anti ISA; Free Teresa Kok, RPK and other ISA detainees

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Last Monday, YB Chong Eng & YB Lydia Ong organized a candlelight vigil in protest of the ISA used on Sin Chew Daily journalist Tan Hoon Cheng, YB Teresa Kok, RPK and other ISA detainees.

I’m so glad the journalist Tan Hoon Cheng and YB Teresa Kok had been released from ISA. When will RPK and the others be released? God Bless Them…
